According to the National Low Income Housing Coalition’s “The Gap: The Affordable Housing Gap Analysis” the United States has a shortage of more than 7.2 million affordable homes available to households with income at or below the poverty line. The report finds that every major metropolitan area in the U.S. has a shortage of “affordable and available” rental homes for this population—and even areas with the greatest availability still have a significant shortage.
